Other nominated malls included Beaugrenelle in Paris by Apsys; Riverside 66 in Tianjin, China, by Hang Lung Properties Ltd.; and The Breeze BSD City in Tangerang, Indonesia, by PT Bumi Serpong Damai Tbk. But the MIPIM Award 2015 for Best Shopping Center went to Markthal Rotterdam, the Netherlands, by the developer Provast. The horseshoe-shaped shopping center opened its doors on October 1, 2014.
The winning project, which was designed by the architects MVRDV, was constructed at a historical location at the Binnenrotte, next to Blaak Station and the largest weekly open air market, and is the Netherlands’ first covered market. Markthal includes a huge market floor under an arch of apartments. Its shape, colorful interior, and soaring height turn the mall into an unique spectacle. It is unique not only for its shape and size, but in particular for the way its different functions are combined. The combination of an apartment building covering a fresh food market with food shops, restaurants, a supermarket, and underground parking is exceptional.
TEN YEARS OF DEVELOPMENT TIME
The Dutch developer Provast is accordingly overjoyed. Partner Hans de Jong declares: “Provast is very excited about the international recognition for Markthal Rotterdam being the 2015 Best Shopping Center. This MIPIM Award shows that creativity and entrepreneurship can stand through even the worst financial crises. During ten years of development time, the project has proved to be the key factor in improving the western part of Rotterdam’s central retail district. With over 3 million visitors in four months, Markthal has already become an icon. The 12,000 sq m of artwork on the Markthal ceiling proves that art really adds value to property. Provast is extremely happy that customers from all over the world love to visit the mall. We thank all who have been part of our team and thank the jury for recognizing the quality of our work.”
