WOOD INSTEAD OF STEEL: KAUFLAND OPENS MODERN STORE IN MARKTREDWITZ, GERMANY WITH SPECIAL SUBSTRUCTURE

In Marktredwitz, Kaufland is deliberately going down the wood path. The new store at Bayreuther Strasse 15, which opens this Monday, has wooden posts and glued beams instead of reinforced concrete in the substructure. For the first time, the company is using natural materials for a stable, low-CO2 foundation made from renewable raw materials from the region.

Sustainability also plays a central role on the roof of the store. At the beginning of next year, a photovoltaic system will be installed and the self-generated electricity will then be used directly in the store. Kaufland has been sourcing 100 percent of its external electricity from renewable sources since the beginning of this year.

The space in the new store is now better utilized than ever. The reduced volume of space optimizes energy requirements. The use of a heat pump ensures increased energy efficiency. Particular attention was also paid to the use of energy-saving and climate-friendly technology, such as energy-saving refrigeration units and LED lighting.

Of the more than 30,000 products, several hundred come from the immediate vicinity. This is because the assortment selection focuses on products from suppliers in the region. In addition to well-known brand-name manufacturers, the range also includes numerous products from medium-sized companies. To make it easier for consumers to select items from the region, all products made in the region are marked on the shelves with the regional heart. “With our new store, we not only continue to be there for our customers in Marktredwitz, but now also offer them a modern shopping experience on a sustainable foundation,” says store manager Patricia Heining.

The large supermarket offers its customers 240 parking spaces, including an e-charging station. The charging stations are powered by 100 percent green electricity, which carries the environmentally friendly “Green electricity” label. This label guarantees that the green electricity comes 100 percent from renewable energy sources and stands for the highest quality and transparency.
