Westfield Hamburg-Überseequartier celebrated the opening of its retail, gastronomy and leisure space yesterday, April 8, with an opening party with a maritime flair. The event kicked off in the early afternoon with an exclusive ceremony for tenants and project participants, at which Dr. Peter Tschentscher, First Mayor of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, and Jean-Marie Tritant, CEO of Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield (URW), officially opened the new quarter in front of around 650 invited guests.

Yesterday, after a ribbon-cutting ceremony hosted by the Mayor of Hamburg Peter Tschentscher, URW CEO Jean-Marie Tritant and Theda Juliane Mustroph, General Manager of Westfield Hamburg-Überseequartier, the new quarter opened to the public for the first time.
Opening Statements:
Jean-Marie Tritant, CEO of URW:
“We are very proud to celebrate the opening of Westfield Hamburg-Überseequartier today. This important milestone brings a new destination to the city of Hamburg, offering an attractive selection of stores, restaurants and entertainment in an architecturally unique setting in the heart of the city, directly on the banks of the Elbe. With the opening, URW is expanding its portfolio of shopping centers in the best locations in major cities, which are operated under the strong Westfield brand. We look forward to the next phases of the project and thank the City of Hamburg, our partners and our retailers for sharing our vision and ongoing commitment.”

Hamburg’s First Mayor Dr. Peter Tschentscher:
“Right on the waterfront, between the port and the historic center, HafenCity has been created over the last 25 years as a district that expresses Hamburg’s self-image: modern and traditional at the same time, founded in the heart of the city on historic port areas, with a view of the world. Westfield Hamburg-Überseequartier has been part of this since today,” he said in his opening speech. Many of the retail and restaurant businesses are represented in Hamburg and Germany for the first time. The new offer is therefore not seen as competition to the city center. “The city and Überseequartier are two shopping and experience centers that can mutually develop charisma and appeal.”

Theda J. Mustroph, General Manager Westfield Hamburg-Überseequartier:
“We are delighted to welcome guests from near and far to Westfield Hamburg-Überseequartier. This vibrant, community-oriented location directly on the Elbe is a unique environment in which people can live, work, store and spend their leisure time. The quarter creates new meeting places and various local leisure activities that are accessible to all. It is a great pleasure for us to be able to share this extraordinary place with the city.”

Westfield Hamburg-Überseequartier was built on a former industrial site and is part of one of the largest urban development projects in Europe, Hamburg HafenCity. It was designed and realized with a clear focus on sustainability, both during the construction process and for the operation that has now started. For this comprehensive sustainability concept, Westfield Hamburg Überseequartier was the first urban quarter in Germany to be awarded the “BREEAM Communities” certificate and an “excellent” rating.

A new destination for shopping, dining and leisure experiences
The retail, gastronomy and leisure sectors form the lively core of the quarter. A particular characteristic of the letting strategy is that more than half of the brands and concepts represented in the quarter are not yet represented in Hamburg city center and a third are not yet represented in Hamburg at all.
The anchor tenants in Westfield Hamburg-Überseequartier are Breuninger, one of the largest Zara flagship stores in Germany, H&M, ANSON’S, Mango, Thalia, INTERSPORT Knudsen, Bershka, PULL&BEAR, Stradivarius, Oysho, REWE Piclum, Sports Club as well as KIBU JUMPER Adventure World, Port des Lumières, Lego Discovery Center and Kinopolis.
The offer is complemented by apartments, offices, three hotels and the cruise terminal. The district is optimally integrated into the local infrastructure with its own subway station, bus lines and a wide range of mobility options. With its direct location on the Elbe and a unique waterfront promenade, Westfield Hamburg-Überseequartier is establishing a new way of living, working and relaxing right on the water.
