First location of Berlin porridge brand “HAFERKATER” outside Germany opens in Austria

After more than 20 locations in Germany, the Berlin start-up has now also opened a store at Vienna Airport.

In the departure hall of Terminal 1, travelers can now enjoy a special culinary selection from porridge experts “Haferkater”: These include a selection of healthy porridge, oat rice bowls, wraps – 88% of the food is free from additives – and coffee specialties. On offer are purely vegetarian or vegan dishes made from organic products, such as the popular porridge creations “Powerkater” with dates, “Waldbeerkater” with compote and chocolate drops or the protein-rich “Proteinkater” – to take away or to enjoy on site in a pleasant atmosphere.

“Even more culinary choice at the airport: I am delighted that we are the location for the first international expansion of the start-up Haferkater. Passengers, guests and employees now have even more exclusive brand offers and healthy snacks and meals on site. With the new store, we are also further expanding the good cooperation with our long-standing catering partner Lagardére Travel Retail”, says Julian Jäger, Member of the Management Board of Flughafen Wien AG in an announcement.

Ursula Fürnhammer, CEO Lagardère Travel Retail Austria, adds: “With Haferkater, we are consciously focusing on more vegan and vegetarian options and creating more breakfast options for departing travelers in Terminal 1, which opens in the early hours of the morning. We are very much looking forward to working with Haferkater and to creating even more culinary diversity together with Vienna Airport.

“We are delighted about this next step and the expansion into Austria at Vienna Airport, which is used by people from all over the world. With Lagardère Travel Retail, we have an experienced partner on board who will master our first store in Vienna with great operational expertise,” adds Leandro Burguete, co-founder of Haferkater.

Haferkater is a success story that continues to this day: In a former kebab store in Friedrichshain, the three childhood friends Leandro Burguete, Anna Schubert and Levin Siert founded the first Haferkater Café in the fall of 2014. Just one year after launching, the three of them won the Gastro-Gründerpreis with their new concept. There are now 24 Haferkater branches – mainly in train stations – in 17 cities in Germany and now also at Vienna Airport. The basis of the range is oats, which are freshly ground, roasted and cooked in water in the company’s own grain mill every day. The porridge is enriched with various toppings – one of the eight fixed menus is changed every three months and adapted to the respective season. This “porridge-to-go” concept not only offers travelers a healthy alternative to conventional snacks. The coffee is sourced from the oldest German organic roasting company, Niehoff, and the beans come from direct trade. Haferkater attaches great importance to sustainability, including when it comes to packaging: only compostable packaging is used. The company is also part of the Vytal and Recup reusable systems and increases the reusable quota through regular marketing campaigns.

“With Haferkater, we are responding to the needs of active people in urban areas. We focus on oats and a vegan-vegetarian range. It is important to us to do business sustainably and respectfully,” says Anna Schubert, co-founder, describing Haferkater’s vision.

Haferkater is already available in over 1800 stores in Germany and Austria. The company plans to expand, particularly in the DACH region, with around 10 new locations per year.

The French travel retail specialist Lagardère Travel Retail is currently represented on five continents in 42 countries and is one of the world’s leading companies in the travel retail sector with its Duty-Free, F&B and Travel Essentials business segments. At Vienna Airport, Lagardère already successfully operates Relay, Aida, Burger King, Costa Coffe, Zapfmeisterei and now also Haferkater.
