German Shoe Chain Görtz Files For Insolvency Again

After its recent insolvency case in 2022, Hamburg-based Görtz Retail GmbH has filed for insolvency again.

The District Court of Hamburg has opened preliminary insolvency proceedings over the assets of Görtz Retail GmbH. The proceedings that have been opened are a so-called weak provisional appointment. This means that the provisional administrator must now approve the debtor’s actions for them to take effect. However, he is not solely authorized to dispose of the assets.

In September 2022, Görtz had applied for the first time for protective shield proceedings for the parent company Ludwig Görtz GmbH and insolvency proceedings under self-administration for the operating subsidiaries Görtz Retail GmbH and Görtz Logistik GmbH. At that time, the renowned company still operated 160 stores.

After a long search for investors, entrepreneur Bolko Kissling finally took over the struggling shoe retailer with around 50 stores in mid-2023. Since then, Kissling had announced numerous new concepts, but only implemented a few of them. Most recently, several landlords successfully sued Görtz for eviction due to rent arrears.
