Grocery retailers and discounters are increasingly testing pick-up stations

The discounter Aldi is following Rewe’s example and testing pick-up stations in Germany. The aim is to test the function of the pick-up containers and gain insights into changes in customer demand.

Customers can place orders via an app and collect the goods from the containers one to five days later. Access is via QR code. However, the pick up stations are only accessible during certain time slots and the product range is smaller than the range in the store. The container, which is around seven meters long, three meters wide and three and a half meters high, is refrigerated and therefore also allows fresh and frozen goods to be stored.

At competitor Rewe, customers can already order online in every second Rewe store and pick up their purchases pre-packed. Rewe is also testing pick up containers. The stations are a branch of the so-called Click & Collect system. You order online and pick up the goods later. This saves you having to wait at the checkout. So far, no grocery retailer uses pick-up stations across the board. The companies unanimously say that these are test projects to gain insights into changes in customer demand.
