Hamburg´s Westfield-Überseequartier May Face Another Postponement

Technical and construction problems will likely prevent the opening of the Westfield Center in Hamburg’s Hafencity, which was planned for mid October.

The third opening date of the center, planned for October 17, will likely not be met due to massive construction and safety problems, particularly in terms of fire protection, and water damages. Recently, there had been water ingress in the underground car park and technical rooms, and the buildings were leaking on several roof areas.

Center operator Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield holds on to the current opening date as of now, however, as “Textilwirtschaft” reported, tenants in particular have doubts about the punctual completion of the construction site, as the exact opening has not yet been confirmed to them.

The delay also incurs a substantial cost increase for the whole development. Currently, the total investment sum for Überseequartier is estimated at 2.16 billion euros. Previously, the Group had assumed a figure of just 1.64 billion euros.
