IKEA Introduces New Secondhand Marketplace

Ikea is trialling an online marketplace that will allow customers to sell secondhand furniture online, challenging marketplace competitors such as Ebay.

“Ikea Preowned” will be tested in Madrid and Oslo until the end of the year, with plans for a global expansion, reports the Financial Times.

Compared to its already existing online service that focuses on buying and reselling customers´ furniture, the new platform aims much higher by allowing customers to sell directly to each other, enhanced by free product listing and payment options also covering cash or Ikea vouchers. The initiative is part of Ikea’s digital transformation and aims to make the company more ‘circular and climate positive’ by 2030.

The new marketplace is part of a transformation over the past few years aiming to change the retailer from being an out-of-town service to a business offering online sales, stores located in the city center and assembly services.
