intu announces first three brands for intu Costa del Sol

The new European destination is set to open in 2023 and is positioned on a major site to the north of Torremolinos, Spain.

intu, together with Eurofund, have agreed Heads of Terms with three major operators for its 235,000 sq m global resort project intu Costa del Sol in the south of Spain.

Yelmo Films, trading as Yelmo Cines, has signed detailed Heads of Terms for a 9,500m2 16-screen state of the art cinema located in The Lakes area of the resort – one of its eight differently themed and designed neighbourhoods.

Fernando Evole, country manager at Yelmo Cines, commented: “It is a pleasure and such an opportunity for Yelmo Cines to be part of a project as special as intu Costa del Sol. The creativity and innovation behind the commercial concept as well as the size of the opportunity are the two key factors that have convinced us to design the best cinema here that you can imagine.”

The second agreement is with Wave House International, which has signed detailed Heads for Terms for its surfpark concept – to be located in The Hood. Wave House’s original and revolutionary concept epitomises the surfing lifestyle and will include a full size 4,300m2 surf pool, offering every day surfing, special event competitions, a Wave Club and Surf School, as well as capacity for live music entertainment The San Diego HQ’d operation famously refined its concept with world’s best board riders Kelly Slater, Tony Hawk and Terje Haakonsen.

Lochtefeld, CEO and founder of Wave House International, said of the intu Costa del Sol project: “The Wave House surfpark and entertainment lifestyle venue is coming to the most exciting retail development in the world: intu Costa Del Sol. A shopping resort with this vision, scale and ambition is the ultimate place to launch Wave House 2.0 in Europe. Powered by our Surf Loch Wave Systems, Wave House offers a taste of the surfing lifestyle – music and delicious food and drinks overlooking real ocean waves, ridden by real surfers, and only found at intu Costa Del Sol.”

The third agreement is with Gran Teatro Bankia Príncipe Pío, Santiago Segura, José Mota y Luis Álvarez, trading as Gran Teatro Costa del Sol, signing Heads of Terms for the resort’s theatre which is to be situated in The Lakes neighbourhood of the project. Seating some 1,500 guests across two levels, the multi-purpose 4,000m2 theatre will attract world class entertainment including theatre productions, music, comedy and cultural acts from across Europe.

Luis Álvarez, CEO and Co-Founder of Gran Teatro Principe Pio, S.L., commented that this alliance between intu, Gran Teatro Bankia Príncipe Pío, Santiago Segura, José Mota and Luis Álvarez will signify the opening of one of the most revolutionary spaces in Spain in 2023; the Gran Teatro Costa del Sol will have the largest offer of shows in Andalucía.

Martin Breeden, development director for intu commented: “We have made a strong start on leasing intu Costa del Sol following a series of discussions with multiple operators over the last 18 months. These agreements give a strong indication of the types of operators we’re able to attract.”

Ian Sandford, project director for intu Costa del Sol and president of intu’s JV partner Eurofund, added: “intu Costa del Sol will be a resort like no other, bringing together international brands and global visitors in an unforgettable location. We are in advanced discussions with numerous brands eager to join the scheme.”

The new European destination is set to open in 2023 and is positioned on a major site to the north of Torremolinos, accessed via the major southern highway and just 3 km from Malaga’s international airport. Eight distinct, vibrant neighbourhoods, each with their own dynamic energy, have been curated to provide unique experiences for each and every guest. Each year, 29 million guests are expected to fly, drive or walk into the resort, aimed at world travellers and local residents alike.
